Bryan Charles Gould CNZM (born
February 11,
1939) is a former politician in the
United Kingdom, but was born in
New Zealand. He was
Labour Member of Parliament for
Dagenham from 1983 until his resignation on
May 17,
1994, having first been elected as MP for
Southampton Test in October 1974, a seat he held until 1979.
He was a member of
Neil Kinnock's Shadow Cabinet, but was defeated in the
Labour leadership election which took place after the
1992 election to succeed Kinnock. He subsequently resigned from
John Smith's shadow cabinet, in a dispute about Europe, and left British politics.
He was a
Rhodes Scholar, attending
Balliol College, Oxford, and subsequently a tutorial Fellow in law at
Worcester College.
In July 1994 he took on the role of Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Waikato in New Zealand. He retired from this role in
2004.
He was awarded Companion of the
New Zealand Order of Merit in
2003 for services to
Education. In October 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Waikato. He is a board member of
TVNZ.
Bryan Gould is also the brother of
Wayne Gould, best known for popularising
